Crisis Management: What Happens in the First 60 Seconds

Crises never arrive with prior notice. Whether it is a fire, intrusion, or public safety threat — what you do in the first 60 seconds often determines the overall outcome.

First Action: STAY CALM and CONFIRM

The most important action is not to run — but to confirm what is actually happening.

  1. Take a breath — panic kills judgement
  2. Confirm reality — is this a real or false threat?
  3. Activate the alert chain — contact the right people

First Minute: Alert & Isolate

If the threat is confirmed:

  • Notify internal security through pre-designated channels
  • Isolate the affected area — close doors, block access
  • Begin limited communication — only those who need to know at this stage

Too many people "helping" in a crisis often causes confusion.

Second 30-60: Key Decisions

At this point, you need to decide:

  • Shelter or evacuate?
  • Involve authorities? (police, fire, medical)
  • Shut down systems? (critical infrastructure)

These decisions must be practised before a crisis occurs — that is why tabletop exercises are so important.

Why Simulation Training Matters

In a real emergency, the human brain tends to freeze. Training builds muscle memory so actions become automatic:

  • The team knows their roles
  • Communication channels have been tested
  • Decisions are made faster

Audit Your Readiness

Ask yourself:

  1. Does your team know who to contact in a crisis?
  2. When was your last simulation exercise?
  3. Is your Emergency Response Plan (ERP) updated within the last 12 months?

If any answer is "not sure", it is time to invest in crisis training and planning.
